Why Attorney Consultation Is Always a Good Idea

The legal systems of democratic civilized countries are in many ways a magnificent achievement to behold. Then again, the courts of modern day US have also become very complex, and it is at best very difficult for people to successfully navigate the system without special training and expert knowledge. Even with a very understanding judge, trying to represent yourself can cause undue delay in the resolution of your case. And as even small procedural errors can be very damaging to the outcome of a case the conclusion is that, in most cases, attorney consultation is the best way to protect your rights.

Many people shy away from attorney consultation for the fear that it will be terribly expensive. However, you should remember that there may sometimes be more at stake than you first realized. Getting some initial advice may also be entirely free.

A lawyer, according to Black's Law Dictionary, is "a person learned in the law; as an attorney, counsel or solicitor; a person licensed to practice law." Working as a lawyer involves the practical application of abstract legal theories and knowledge to solve specific individualized problems, or to advance the interests of those who hire lawyers to perform legal services. The role of the lawyer varies significantly across legal jurisdictions.(1)

An Attorney On Any Legal Issue

A good attorney can often influence the outcome of a legal dispute. At least consulting with an attorney is thus highly recommended before you tackle ANY legal issue. As with medicine, it is equally true in law that "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". Having an attorney review contracts and other documents - for real estate closing, for example - before you sign them will help ensure that you have a genuine understanding of all your rights and obligations.

Naturally there are many different situations and kinds of laws where you may want legal advice and representation - from tax issues to immigration - however, the skills and expertise of your attorney are never more important than they are if you are a criminal defendant. Being arrested for a crime is often frightening and overwhelming, and you do not necessarily have to be a career criminal in order for this to happen. Depending on the charge, you may be facing incarceration, a significant fine or both. So after the initial attorney consultation, you want to make sure that you find the right lawyer to defend you.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to say what the exact cost of legal representation should or will be, as the cost of an attorney can vary substantially. Some types of cases are simply more costly to litigate than others and attorneys have different ways of calculating their fees. Generally speaking though, it goes without saying that the cost is greatly affected by how serious and complicated the case is. Fighting an unjust traffic ticket is naturally not as expensive as a defending against a felony criminal charge.

As the initial attorney consultation many times is entirely free, it is nonetheless always a good idea to sit down with an attorney and discuss your case. If nothing else, you will be much better informed about what options are available to you.
